An Idaho Falls man faces two felony charges for an incident involving his 1-month-old son.

Christopher Robert Stum, 34, is charged with injury to child that carries a maximum sentence of 10 years imprisonment, a $50,000 fine, $5,000 compensatory fine and restitution. The second charge of destruction, alteration or concealment of evidence is punishable by five years imprisonment and a $10,000 fine.

The charges developed after Stum took the baby to the emergency room at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center on Jan. 22, according to court records. Medical personnel told police the child had sustained second-degree burns on 24 percent of his body.

Stum told police the incident happened at his home when he was bathing the baby. After noticing the boy was cold, Stum filled a pitcher with hot water from the bathtub's faucet, according to court records.

Stum said the baby began to scream in pain as he poured the water on him. The baby's skin also began to redden and peel. That's when Stum took the baby to the ER.

A water temperature of 140 degrees Fahrenheit can cause second-degree burns on a baby in one second.

When officers went to check on the water heater temperature at Stum's residence it was set at 121 degrees. According to the police affidavit, Stum later allegedly admitted to adjusting the water heater from 150 to 121 before taking his son to the hospital.

Stum was released from the Bonneville County Jail for pretrial services. He's scheduled to attend his preliminary hearing at 1 p.m. Wednesday before Magistrate Judge John C. Dewey in the Bonneville County Courthouse.
