POCATELLO - The City of Pocatello plans to begin the West Whitman Street reconstruction project on Monday, June 2, weather permitting. The project is expected to continue for six weeks, and city crews will be working from 7 a.m. until about 6 p.m. each day, Monday through Thursday. There is also the likelihood that private contractors hired for this project will be working Fridays and Saturdays.
Improvements scheduled for the section of West Whitman between South Lincoln Avenue and South Grant Avenue include:
* New water main lines from the river to South Lincoln;
* Renewed water service lines up to the meter for each home along the route;
* Widening of West Whitman five feet on each side to result in a 40-foot wide street, which will allow for parking on each side of the street and room for two vehicles to pass safely;
* New curb, gutter and driveway approaches along the route;
* Construction of new storm water catch basins;
* Reshaping and repaving of the street; and
* Planting of new trees upon completion of the construction.
Parking will be restricted along the route, and residents are asked to park all vehicles away from the construction zone during the day. Every effort will be made to provide local access to property; however, there may be times when access is restricted in the immediate area while crews are digging, pouring concrete or paving. Access will be restored each evening and over the weekends.
Some short-term disruption to the water service is expected during the reconstruction work. While the city will make every effort to notify those affected, unexpected water disruptions may occur. Individuals in the construction area are encouraged to keep a supply of drinking water available.
It is also highly likely that Intermountain Gas may be working in the area to repair and/or replace gas lines and move facilities to accommodate the city's work. There may be short-term disruption to gas service as well.c Residents and motorists traveling through the area should expect delays. The City strongly encourages motorists to use alternate routes if possible.
