MALAD - In what was described as an unceremonious procedure, the Oneida County Jail was demolished and hauled away.
"They just came in and started tearing it down," said Sheriff Jeff Semrad.
The jail closed permanently last December and city workers removed the building this week.
Metal from the site was salvaged along with fencing from the jail. Semrad removed a metal plate from the jail's bars bearing an 1878 patent. There are currently no plans to rebuild at the site, he said.
"It's my understanding that they're just going to turn it into lawn," Semrad said.
