POCATELLO - A Downey woman with a long history of animal-related misdemeanors who was placed on two years probation in October 2007 has been sentenced to serve jail time after a local judge determined she violated her probation.

It is uncertain how Sharon Lake violated her probation, but officials at the Bannock County Jail confirmed Saturday that the 71-year-old Downey woman was incarcerated on Thursday and her release date is set for March 7.

This is the second stint Lake is serving for violating her probation. More than a year ago, she was sentenced to serve out a 170-day suspended sentence when found in violation of her probation.

Lake was convicted of misdemeanor animal nuisance in December 2005, after authorities found about 60 horses in questionable condition on her Downey property. Sixth District Magistrate Judge Gaylen L. Box sentenced Lake to 170 days in jail and fined her $800, and suspended the sentence before placing her on two years probation.

As a condition of her probation, Lake was to have no more than five horses on her property and could not have any studs or colts there.

Lake was charged with violating that probation when in August 2007 authorities found about 65 horses on her Downey property. She again stood in front of Box in October of that year.

The judge, pointing out the severity of Lake's behavior and the seriousness of his impending sentence, read a list of more than 15 animal-related misdemeanors dating back to 1982, and including several since 2000.

After reading off the list of Lake's prior indiscretions, Box said he had little choice but to sentence the woman to serve the 170 days beginning on Nov. 2, 2007.
