SODA SPRINGS - With all precincts counted, voters have rebuked embattled Caribou County Prosecutor Criss James' bid for re-election, opting instead to support fellow Republican candidate Gregg Haney in Tuesday's primary election.
Haney received 1,747 votes for the prosecutor post compared to 276 for James.
"It came out a little more lopsided than I expected," Haney said. "I am a little bit humbled by it."
Haney, a Soda Springs attorney, will now square off against Democrat Jim Adrich, also a Soda Springs attorney, for Caribou County prosecutor in November's election.
"I think it will be a lot more competitive race," Haney said. "I will be campaigning up to the end. I am not taking anything for granted."
In the Caribou County sheriff's race Tuesday, four Republicans were vying to be on the Republican ticket in November to replace Sheriff Ray Vanvleet, who is not seeking re-election. Ric L. Anderson, calling himself an outsider because he works for the Soda Springs Police Department, won the primary and will be the Republican candidate for Caribou County Sheriff in November.
"The others candidates all work or have worked for the Sheriff's Office, so I am the outsider," Anderson said. "I thought it would be a much closer race because all the candidates are really good guys."
He will now battle Democrat Michael Haderlie and Independent J. Adam Mabey in November for the sheriff's position.
Anderson, with 1,024 votes, received more than twice the votes of his two closest competitors - Gary Etchison with 409 votes and Rick Stokoe with 404 votes. Phillip Christensen Jr. received 278 votes.
Phil Christensen, Phillip's father, did score an upset victory, however. He ousted incumbent District 1 Caribou County Commissioner R. Douglas Hogan. Both men were running as Republicans, and Christensen will now face Independent George Hulse in November.
Christensen received 1,087 votes compared to Hogan's 953.
Hogan, 73, who is 15 months into his first two-year term as a commissioner, said he was surprised at the loss but has no intention of running for office again.
"There was no real major issues, just two guys running for office," Hogan said. "I won't be running again. I am at the age that I have no desire to run again."
Phil Christensen could not be reached for comment.
