PLF applauds ruling for Idaho's ban on government wage-garnishment for unions

The U.S. Supreme Court today upheld Idaho's ban on government payroll deductions to pay for union political activities.

The case: Ysursa v. Pocatello Education Assn

Pacific Legal Foundation, a leading legal watchdog for limited government and individual rights, filed a brief in this case and applauded today's ruling.

"This ruling is an important victory for workers' free choice, and a blow to the unions' practice of politicking on the workers' dime," said PLF Principal Attorney Deborah La Fetra. "The Court properly held that a state may protect its workers' paychecks from union garnishment, because unions have no First Amendment ' right ' to get the state to help them fill their political coffers."

"PLF's brief highlighted how unions exploit workers by abusing the power of wage garnishment, essentially coercing workers to subsidize unions' partisan political activities even over the workers' objections on free speech grounds," La Fetra said.
