POCATELLO — The Pocatello Police Department increased its presence at local high schools Friday morning following a report of a potential threat at Pocatello High School.

Pocatello spokesperson Marlise Irby issued a news release Friday afternoon that said officers responded to Pocatello High School Friday morning and increased police presence at other area high schools “out of an abundance of caution” and “to ensure the safety of students and staff.”

School District 25 notified Pocatello High School parents and guardians at 9:53 a.m. that administrators with the school and district were working with police to “review the report of a rumor at Pocatello High School” and that “all learners and staff (were) safe.”

The school was placed in a temporary hall check out of an abundance of caution, which was lifted at 10:19 a.m., according to a subsequent School District 25 notification.

The city’s news release said the precautionary response was taken to fully assess the information police had received and to account for the possibility the threat could have involved another location.

“Following a thorough review, the officers determined the information was not credible,” the city’s news release said. “As a result, police presence at the high schools was reduced, the officers returned to normal duties and school operations continued as normal for the rest of the day.”

Pocatello Police Chief Roger Schei was also quoted in the news release, stating, “The safety of students, staff and our community is always our top priority. When we receive information like this, we take it seriously and respond quickly. In situations like these, it is always better to be cautious while we work to confirm the facts.”

The Pocatello Police Department also expressed gratitude for the cooperation it receives from school officials, students, staff and parents during their response efforts.
