MPL Granny Square Project

This project runs now through October.

POCATELLO — An old-fashioned craft is getting a vibrant new spin at the Marshall Public Library. From July through October, the library is inviting the community to take part in a creative and charitable endeavor, the Granny Square Project, to support veterans.

The idea is simple and meaningful; for each book read, participants will crochet a granny square inspired by the colors on the book’s cover. Finished squares will be collected and stitched into afghans by volunteers, then donated to Southeastern Idaho Community Action Agency in November to benefit their veterans housing project in honor of Veterans Day. The afghans will be delivered to support veterans in transitional housing supported by SEICAA.

“Granny squares are quick and beginner-friendly, making this a fun and meaningful way to give back,” said Amy Azzouzat, public services supervisor.

The specific granny square pattern for this project is available at the library and online at marshallpl.org. Completed squares should be submitted with a form listing the book’s title and author. They’ll be displayed in the library, and participants are encouraged to share photos on social media. Participants can drop off their granny squares at the library through Oct. 31.

Need help or want to craft with others? Join the library’s weekly Knitting and Crocheting Group, Wednesdays from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

For questions or to volunteer to crochet the squares together, contact Amy Azzouzat at 208-232-1263, ext. 106. If you’d like to learn more about SEICAA’s veterans’ services, contact Angie Rodgers, veterans services coordinator, at 208-232-1114, ext. 146, or visit seicaa.org/veterans/.
