ROCKLAND - After 32 years, Rockland coach Steven May roamed the familiar sidelines at the school for the final time on Friday.

Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, they couldn't send their longtime mentor off with a win.

Rockland ran into the defending state champions from Carey and fell 40-12.

"It was emotional," May said. "There was a good, good crowd that came to the game - some of my players from times long ago."

The Bulldogs kept the score close through the first half, though, and they trailed only 26-6 in the fourth quarter.

For that, May was upbeat after the game.

"I was really happy with our effort, both offensively and defensively," he said.

Sophomore running back Cody Holdalgo carried the ball 11 times for 66 yards to lead Rockland. Quarterback Richie Turnbeaugh threw for 124 yards and a touchdown as well as running for a score. Receiver Mathew Nelson had eight receptions for 136 yards and a score.

May's career isn't finished just yet. Rockland will close out its season next Thursday at Camas County. The game time is yet to be determined, but one thing is certain - with a victory, the Bulldogs (3-4) can send their coach off with a .500 record.
