BOISE — The House State Affairs Committee voted Wednesday to introduce a resolution honoring Coeur d’Alene firefighters and their families for their sacrifice after a gunman opened fire on firefighters responding to a wildfire in June.

The concurrent resolution from Rep. Joe Alfieri, R-Coeur d’Alene, honors Battalion Chiefs Frank Harwood and John Morrison of Kootenai County Fire and Rescue and the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department — who were killed in an ambush by a lone gunman on June 29 — as well as Coeur d’Alene Fire Department engineer David Tysdal, who was critically injured in the same incident.

Alfieri said the resolution was simply asking for recognition of these men and all the members of the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department and Kootenai County Fire and Rescue and the work they did when in the wake of the attack at Canfield Mountain last year.

The ambush was initiated by 20-year-old Wess Roley, who started a wildfire and, after being asked to move his vehicle, opened fire on responding firefighters for several hours before killing himself, as was reported by the Associated Press.

Each firefighter named in the resolution is highlighted for their sacrifice while protecting fellow citizens and, in a wider recognition of first responders across the state, seeks to “affirm that their contributions and difficulties should not be forgotten.”

Earlier this week members of the Professional Firefighters of Idaho submitted nominations to the Idaho Medal of Honor Commission seeking to recognize these three firefighters along with Fritz Wiedenhoff of the Northern Lakes Fire District, who worked with Tysdal at the scene of the incident to prevent additional firefighters from entering the area.
