Bonneville County Sheriff’s deputies arrested two local men following the crash of their vehicle into a tree on Mesa Street in Idaho Falls around 12:30 a.m. Monday.

Augustine Perez Jr., 18, of Idaho Falls and Terrin Malik Hopwood, 20, of Ammon were allegedly observed by a deputy to be speed racing another vehicle near the intersection of 25th E and First Street in Idaho Falls, said Sgt. Bryan Lovell, Bonneville County Sheriff’s spokesman.

When the deputy activated his emergency lights and attempted to catch up to the car driven by Perez and make a traffic stop, Perez turned onto Mesa Street which has a dead-end, Lovell said. The driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a tree in the front yard of a residence.

More deputies arrived at the scene and detained two males exiting the vehicle, Lovell said. Perez was placed under arrest for felony eluding. Hopwood, a passenger in the vehicle, was allegedly found to be in possession of marijuana vapes and charged with misdemeanor possession.

Deputies found an AR-15 rifle in the vehicle and determined that Hopwood allegedly tossed a 9mm handgun onto the front yard of the crash scene, Lovell said. Several more marijuana vapes were found underneath the vehicle.

Both Perez and Hopwood were transported to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center for medical clearance due to minor injuries sustained during the crash before being taken to the Bonneville County Jail, Lovell said.

During the booking process, Hopwood was allegedly found to be in possession of two additional marijuana vapes on his person, Lovell said.

Deputies are continuing to investigate, and no further information is available at this time.
