The Preston boys basketball team looked the part.

Of the defending state champions, that is.

The Indians jumped out to a 25-11 first-quarter lead and never looked back in a 76-64 win over No. 7 Bonneville in the opening round of the Class 5A State Tournament Thursday at Rocky Mountain High School in Meridian.

No. 2 Preston (21-3) will face No. 3 Bishop Kelly (19-6) at 2 p.m. Friday in the semifinals at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa.

Wayd Bailey poured in a game-high 31 points and Kasen Bryce added 19 as Preston shot 58.8% from the field. Lucas Arave led the Bees (11-14) with 11 points.

WENDELL 61, SODA SPRINGS 52

Gavin Hansen led the Cardinals with 17 points and Cooper Thompson added 12, but the seventh-seeded Cardinals couldn’t overcome a 19-9 third-quarter run by the Trojans in a Class 3A State Tournament first-round game Thursday at Meridian High School.

The Cardinals (15-8) will play No. 3 Orofino (18-6) at 2 p.m. in an elimination game back at Meridian.

Jonathan Swainston paced No. 2 Wendell (23-2) with a game-high 24 points.

The loss came against a familiar South East Idaho Conference rival — one that beat Soda Springs 60-50 during the regular season before the Cardinals claimed the district title.

KENDRICK 72, GRACE 49

Bodee Smith scored 16 points and Carter Mecham added 15, but the No. 8 Grizzlies were overwhelmed by the defending state champion Tigers in a Class 2A State Tournament first-round game Thursday at Vallivue High School in Caldwell.

No. 1 Kendrick’s Maddox Kirkland led all scorers with 22 points and Ralli Roetcisoender added 20 as the Tigers (21-3) shot 49% from the field.
