BOISE — For 2,600 meters, Moscow’s Katherine Ruck was in total command of the girls 4A 3,200.

Then up crept Blackfoot’s Rachel Cannon, the defending state champion. The senior went in front with a lap and a half to go and quickly increased her lead en route to a second consecutive state title in 11 minutes and 6.72 seconds, a quarter of a second away from a personal best.

Ruck finished second in 11:16.99.

Cannon hung with the front of the pack for much of the race but didn’t create much distance between herself and the field until late.

“I felt like we kind of came out a little fast, but then the next laps we didn’t really get any faster so I kind of recovered in the middle mile,” Cannon said. “And then I felt really strong coming into the last two laps.”

Cannon has one high school event remaining, today’s 1,600. She plans to meet with coaches from Brigham Young University to discuss a future with its track program early next week.

Her win in the 3,200 helped the Broncos to a fourth-place standing after day one of the state meet. Blackfoot gained 20 points by the end of the day and sits eight points behind Rigby.

Behrend comes up short, Century has three in top 5

One miss. That was the difference between a state championship and second place for Leo Behrend. The Century high jumper matched Rigby’s Diego Garcia with a final clearance of 6-06, and both missed at 6-08. Garcia had scratched twice and Behrend missed three times prior to the final height, meaning Garcia had beaten out the District 5-6 champion.

Behrend cleared 6-08 at the district meet May 7 — six inches better than Garcia — but missed his first attempts at 6-00, 6-04 and 6-06 on Friday.

All jumpers had to deal with wet conditions and a lengthy delay. Rain pounded Dona Larsen Park all morning, and pole vault and high jump were temporarily postponed for safety reasons.

Century’s Trey Cook slipped and collided with the left standard, knocking him out of the high jump and triple jump. Cook still finished fifth after clearing 6-00.

“You just have to adjust to it,” Cook said of the rain. “Just don’t think about it. Once you do one little run through, if you don’t slip, just don’t worry about it.”

Braden Nez of Century also cleared 6-00 and took fourth. The Diamondback trio earned 17 team points in the event. Nez took eighth in state last year in the high jump, Behrend placed third and Cook didn’t qualify for state.

“I’m very proud of myself for that,” Cook said. “I didn’t think I would get over six (feet), but I just kept working at it and I got it.”

Added Nez: “I could’ve done better, but I’m a junior so I’ve got next year to improve my little mistakes.”

Blackfoot relay team overcomes inexperience, wins state

Just over a week ago, the Blackfoot girls 800-meter sprint medley relay team was competing in its first meet as a unit. They won the District 5-6 championship and had the fastest state seed time at 1:51.86.

On Friday, the group won the 4A state title in its second race together.

Freshmen Emily Peterson and Audri Jones, sophomore Michelle Pratt and senior Carissa Fawcett took the title in 1:52.57, edging Canyon Ridge by nearly a full second.

Pratt anchored the race and took the baton with her team in the middle of the pack and 400 meters to go. After about 100 meters, Pratt made her move.

The leggy sophomore came down the final stretch with her teammates cheering her on. She had a comfortable lead and her comrades’ expressions showed it.

The young team looked like seasoned veterans.

“We hand good handoffs. We weren’t down, we weren’t behind in the first couple legs,” Jones said. “It was definitely amazing that Michelle brought us into first.”

Pratt will compete in today’s 800 and 1,600, Fawcett ran the 100 and Jones qualified for the 800 finals.

BOISE — The Century boys are in second place after day one of the 4A track and field championships held at Dona Larsen Park.

Three top-five finishers in the high jump and Tanner Mauseth’s third-place discus finish gave the D-backs 23 points, four shy of Rigby’s 27.

Mauseth will compete in the shot put today, Braden Nez will take part in the 110-meter hurdles finals and the 4x200 relay team will compete.

The Pocatello boys currently sit fifth with 15 points.

Elijah Armstrong and Malachi Armstrong combined to pick up 14 points in the 3,200 and Tyson Balnap placed eighth to earn a point in the triple jump.

Elijah Armstrong will race in the 800 and 1,600 today, Malachi Armstrong will be in the 1,600 and the Indians have 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams.

The Blackfoot boys are eighth with 12 points. Tayson Neff finished fifth in the triple jump and the Broncos’ 1,600 sprint medley relay team took second.

Preston has six points and is in 12th place. Seth Stockdale earned all six points with a third-place leap of 42-09 in the triple jump.

The Highland boys tallied two points. Vincent Kelemete finished seventh in the shot put.

On the girls side, Preston sits in third with 21 points and Blackfoot is fourth with 20.

Preston’s sprint medley relay team took third, Addie Waddoups placed fifth in the triple jump, Berkli Knapp finished third in discus and Billie Hatch came in fourth in the 3,200.

Blackfoot was carried by Cannon’s win in the 3,200 and the sprint medley relay team’s gold.

Pocatello is ninth with nine points. Molly Vitale-Sullivan placed third in the 3,200 and Rachel McGovern followed in sixth.

Century’s sixth-place medley relay team earned the Diamondbacks three points.

Highland’s Sofi Kelemete took fourth in the long jump to earn the Rams five points.

Day two of the 5A and 4A state track and field championships get underway at 9 a.m. today with the remaining field events. Running finals will begin at 1 p.m.
