After four practices, Idaho State has started to deal with injuries — some of them significant.

Sophomore linebacker Mario Jenkins fell to the turf Saturday and didn’t immediately pop back up. The starting inside linebacker was favoring his left leg as he was helped to the sideline by two trainers.

Jenkins’ long-term status is unclear, but any absence for a significant period of time would be a blow to Idaho State’s defensive front seven. Jenkins was a preseason all-Big Sky pick and a rising star in the FCS collegiate ranks.

A native of Nampa and a former running back recruit, Jenkins stepped into a starting role at Idaho State after senior linebacker PJ Gremaud was suspended last season just over 24 hours before ISU played against the University of Utah.

Jenkins led the Bengals with eight tackles and went on to start 12 games, finishing with 120 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, a fumble recovery and three interceptions.

He’s the second starting ISU defensive player hurt this fall. Senior safety Taison Manu went down Thursday, but is expected to try and come back in a week, according to Bengals head coach Mike Kramer.

Offensively, senior receiver Madison Mangum has not practiced after running into a tackling sled in the offseason. Idaho State will not disclose Mangum’s injury, and Kramer said he doesn’t know when he’ll return to the field.

Backup receiver Trae Pilster has joined Mangum on the sideline as he recovers from a leg injury. Defensive linemen Spencer Hoff and Tristan Cano missed practice Saturday, and offensive lineman Kyle Jones is wearing a sling on his right arm and is unavailable to practice.
