Bob Conley Invitational

Pocatello runners Caleb Armstrong and Molly Vitale-Sullivan won the Bob Conley Invitational cross country race Friday at Highland High School.

Armstrong, a freshman, won the boys race in 16 minutes, 32.2 seconds, defeating Bonnveille’s Coen Haroldsen by 0.1 seconds. Armstrong’s time is a new career best.

Through five races, Armstrong has three wins and a fourth-place finish.

Vitale-Sullivan broke the tape in the girls race in 19:53.2. It was the senior’s third win of 2015. Her other two races yielded a third-place and fifth-place finish.

Highland sophomore Anna Sanford finished second in the girls race and was followed by Preston senior Aunika Crowther. Rams sophomore Jill Parry took sixth in 20:58.2, Poky sophomore Ally Whitmer finished eighth in 22 minutes flat, and Preston sophomore Akaela Crowther took 10th in 22:14.3.

Highland took second as a team in the girls race with 62 points. District rival Skyline finished first with 46. Pocatello finished fourth (106).

In the boys race, Caleb Armstrong was followed closely by cousin Malachi, a Pocatello junior. He finished third in 16:41.7. Poky junior Caden Armstrong finished sixth in 16:51.7, and Highland seniors Dallin Rushing (16:57.6) and Jon Carlson (17:02.1) took seventh and eighth. Bear Lake sophomore Jackson Pratt finished 10th in 17:06.7, a new personal best.

Pocatello finished second with 56 points, 10 behind Skyline. Highland took third with 68 team points.

Rob Campbell Invitational

The Shelley boys swept the top three spots and won the Rob Campbell Invitational cross country race Friday in Shelley.

Russets runners Austin Stewart, Mark Crandall and Chase Barrow finished first through third. Stewart won with a time of 16 minutes, 5.7 seconds and Barrow set a new personal best of 16:41.1. Teammate David Searle took sixth in 16:53.0 and Shelley edged Madison by eight team points (45 to 53).

In the girls race, Shelley senior LeAnn Larkin led the Russets to a third-place finish (75 team points) with her personal-best time of 19:06.5, good for third individually. Blackfoot junior Michelle Pratt finished fifth in 19:15.2 and sophomore teammate Abby Hurst took sixth with a personal-best time of 19:18.2. Shelley senior Klarissa Andersen finished ninth in 19:47.7 and teammate Paytin Drollinger took 12th in 20:00.1.

The Blackfoot girls finished fifth with 125 total points.

VOLLEYBALL

Malad Invitational

Malad won the nine-team Malad Invitational tournament Saturday in Malad. The Dragons came from behind to defeat Nampa Christian in the championship match, 16-25, 25-16, 15-12.

“They’re a solid team,” said Dragons coach Camie Tripp of Nampa Christian. “I was looking forward to seeing them play. We know that we’ll likely be seeing them at the state tournament if everything goes as we hope. It was a good opportunity to see them as well as other top teams from the 2A classification.”

The Dragons downed the Trojans earlier in the double-elimination tournament, 25-18, 25-23. Malad also took down Declo (25-14, 25-13) and West Jefferson (25-11, 25-6) in pool play and defeated West Jefferson (25-7, 25-12) and Preston (25-22, 25-23) to reach the championship match.

Taber Paskett and Hanah Peterson led the offense with 43 and 35 kills, respectively. Lindsay Sorensen scooped 37 digs, Rylee Tripp led the defense with 16 blocks and Paytin Tripp chipped in six aces, 13 blocks and 140 assists.

Malad (26-4, 5-0 2A District 5) plays Thursday at Aberdeen.

BOYS SOCCER

CENTURY 2, BURLEY 0

Sumner Young came off the bench to provide Century a needed energy boost as the D-backs won 2-0 at Burley on Saturday.

Young scored the last goal of the game in the 60th minute.

“Sumner Young played really well off the bench. He gave the team energy,” said Century coach Rocky Rhoads. “He was fantastic.”

Brandon Bob added Century’s other goal in the 20th minute.

Century (10-1-1, 5-0-1 4A District 5-6) plays Tuesday at Preston.

SKYLINE 4, POCATELLO 0

Pocatello put up a fight against 5A opponent Skyline before losing 4-0 Saturday on the road.

The last goals scored by the Grizzlies came in the final 10 minutes. Indians coach George Asboe said he sees progress being made.

“The Indians are back in the fight as far as playing hard from whistle to whistle,” Asboe said.

Pocatello (1-11-1, 1-7 4A District 5-6) hosts American Falls on Monday.

NOTE: Snake River’s home game against North Fremont was canceled because the Huskies do not have a team anymore. The Panthers (8-6, 2-2 3A District 5) hosts Marsh Valley on Tuesday.

GIRLS SOCCER

SNAKE RIVER 3, MALAD 1

Snake River scored two goals in the second half to break a 1-1 tie and pull off a 3-1 victory over Malad on Saturday at home.

“The girls played a dang good game.” said Panthers coach Randy Turpin. “They just worked hard as a team. When they work as a team they play really well,”

Snake River (8-5, 5-1-1 3A District 5) hosts Marsh Valley on Tuesday.

TETON 6, MARSH VALLEY 5

Marsh Valley was defeated 6-5 by Teton on a last-minute goal Saturday at home.

Ty Case and Colbey Shurtiff scored a goal apiece to put the Eagles ahead 5-4 in the second half, but Marsh couldn’t hold onto the lead.

“We lost focus,” said Eagles coach Justin Larson. “We were playing really good. And I think we stopped playing before the game ended.”

Marsh Valley (5-9, 4-1 3A District 5) plays Tuesday at Snake River.
