A new report on Charlie Kirk’s assassination last year says his Turning Point USA organization insisted he speak outdoors despite security concerns from officials at the university where he was killed. It also found that the university didn’t properly assess dangers, including the possibility of a rooftop shooter. Those were among the key findings in a report released Friday by Utah Valley University. The review assessed security procedures for the conservative activist's Sept. 10, 2025, appearance at the Orem, Utah, campus. Investigators examined planning conversations between Turning Point and university officials, and the university’s response to the shooting. Utah Valley said the review was done independently by outside consultants.
A police detective says Tasia Fortune was apparently killed in a drug dispute before her body was hung in a tree in a “staged” lynching behind an abandoned home in the Mississippi capital this summer. Police Det. Samuel Dukes, citing the medical examiner's opinion, offered the testimony Friday during a hearing for the first of two men who have been arrested in the killing. Like Fortune, both defendants are Black. A third man turned himself in Friday. Fortune's hanging body was discovered on Aug. 3. The case has attracted widespread attention because it has recalled actual lynchings in the Southern state.

The federal government is defending its officers after a fatal crash last weekend involving an immigrant in western Michigan. The Department of Homeland Security is trying to counter any claim that officers were chasing the vehicle when Mario Coronado Juarez died Sunday in Grand Rapids. The department says officers were about a half-mile away when they saw smoke from the crash. The government says officers had stopped the enforcement action when Juarez had fled the scene. Juarez did not have U.S. legal status. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has directed state police to investigate the crash.

N.C. State’s former director of sports medicine faces felony and misdemeanor criminal charges after being accused of sexually abusing former Wolfpack male athletes under the guise of treatment. Authorities in Florida arrested Robert M. Murphy Jr. on Wednesday night. He was being held on out-of-state fugitive warrants from North Carolina. Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman says a grand jury indicted Murphy on nine felony counts of sexual contact under pretext of medical treatment and 23 counts of sexual battery. More than 30 athletes have accused Murphy of misconduct in civil lawsuits dating to 2022.
In June, a 2-year-old in Nampa accidentally shot and killed themselves with an unsecured firearm, prompting a police investigation and subsequent charges against 19-year-old Jakob Dean Hirsbrunner for involuntary manslaughter and injury to a child.
A man was left bloodied and injured in an encounter with immigration enforcement agents in a Chicago suburb. Police in Evanston, Illinois, just outside Chicago, say that the man reported injuries to his head, neck and teeth after federal agents tried to arrest him during Sunday's encounter. An agent told police that the man was mistaken for a fugitive they were seeking, and he was later released when agents realized he was a U.S. citizen. The man told a bystander he was on his way to a pharmacy when the encounter happened.
Police in London have said English cricket player Robin Das has been charged with two counts of rape. The 24-year-old Das plays for county team Essex. The Metropolitan Police says in a statement that he was arrested on Aug. 27, 2025, following an investigation into reports that a woman was raped in Brixton in London on March 30, 2024. The police force says Das was charged with two counts of rape on July 23 this year. It says he attended Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Sept. 11 and will appear at Inner London Crown Court on Oct. 9.
A Democratic congressman says a Venezuelan man shot by a federal immigration officer in Texas has been told by a specialist he needs surgery to remove a bullet near his spine. Wilber Rafael Garces Perez was taken to an ICE detention center hours after he was shot Sunday. U.S. Rep. Greg Casar says the 28-year-old is in constant pain with a bloody wound. He was shot while making a DoorDash delivery in Austin. ICE has not explained the shooting, only saying the incident was a "targeted vehicle stop." It follows a summer of increased ICE enforcement in Austin, with over 1,000 arrests, mostly of immigrants without criminal records.
