Childhood recalls the lilac blooms

My Mother gathered to display

Capturing nature’s offering

It was my favorite bouquet.

Later, with time and effort

I reached what I desired

My very own lilac bush

Triumphantly acquired.

Fulfilling my dream and expectation

It beautified each spring

Increasing in fragrance and beauty

Though I didn’t do a thing.

This morning while whizzing by that bush

Then glancing through rearview mirror

I realized I have made no bouquets

For more than twenty years.

How like that is ownership —

While life heads to an end

“Stuff” crowds to ornaments of hope

And becomes a thing to tend.
