IDAHO FALLS — A fast-moving wildfire near railroad tracks in Idaho Falls Wednesday afternoon forced authorities to halt train traffic and threatened nearby businesses before fire crews brought it under control.

Emergency dispatchers coordinated with the railroad to stop train traffic in the area as Idaho Falls Fire Department crews battled the blaze, which broke out near North Haroldsen Drive and burned about eight acres of dry grass stretching from a fence line toward the railroad tracks.

The fire was reported around 1:50 p.m. and is believed to have been sparked by metal work at the scene, which produced sparks that ignited nearby dry grass — a reminder, fire officials said, of how quickly a small ignition source can escalate under current conditions.

Firefighters encountered multiple spot fires and burning debris across the area, creating rapidly changing conditions and challenging access.

The Idaho Falls Fire Department deployed eight fire trucks to battle the blaze.

Firefighters quickly contained the fire and remained on scene for a while afterward to monitor the area, extinguish hot spots and prevent rekindling in the windy conditions.

No injuries and no significant property damage were reported.

"This was a fast-moving fire in a complex area to access, and our crews executed a strong, coordinated response," said Idaho Falls Fire Chief Johan Olson. "They did an outstanding job stopping the fire before it could impact nearby businesses or cause significant loss. With the unusually dry conditions we're experiencing, we urge the public to treat current conditions more like mid-summer. Please use extreme caution with anything that could create sparks around dry vegetation."

The Fire Department is reminding residents that heat, wind and dry conditions are significantly elevating fire risk across the region. Residents should avoid any activities that may produce sparks near dry grass and report signs of fire immediately.
