POCATELLO — “What’s your favorite scary movie?” The iconic slasher movie line from “Scream” is well known among horror fans, and it will be the first thing guests of Spirit Halloween hear when walking through its doors next week.

With a fresh location at the former site of Caribou Jack’s, 120 N. Arthur Ave., in Historic Downtown Pocatello, Spirit Halloween is rising from the grave and returning for the sequel with a planned Aug. 12 launch date.

Last year, the popular Halloween store wasn’t able to find a suitable location in the Gate City area. Antonia Ledvina, who is the district manager for Spirit Halloween and has been with the company for 10 years, heard the community loud and clear regarding their dismay in missing out on an iconic Halloween store staple. Thankfully, Caribou Jack’s owner Robert Lau reached out to the spooky-centric company and invited the store to utilize his space.

Now, for the first time ever, Spirit Halloween will debut in the historic downtown area and is bringing with it a host of hilarious and frightening costumes, towering animatronics, spooky decor and plenty of horror-centric collectibles for the largest masked villain down to the tiniest ghoulish goblin.

While the former Caribou Jack’s location is smaller compared to other spaces across the United States, each store is always designed with Spirit Halloween’s spooky aesthetics in mind, so every guest who walks through its doors can immerse themselves in corridors jam-packed with gravestones, grinning monsters, multitudes of masks and creative costumes.

“We try to keep it as close as we can to the main store in New Jersey,” Ledvina said. “But we do have little augmented places that we go into, and this is just one of them.”

New additions this year include a previously announced xenomorph animatronic from the horror franchise “Alien,” which will tower above patrons at nearly 7 feet tall. The dripping, acid-filled cosmic creature will scan for prey as its torso moves side to side before its inner jaw leaps out in a teeth-popping movement that delivers a surprise jump scare to any who dare linger.

While Ledvina wouldn’t confirm or deny the out-of-this-world alien would be lurking at the Pocatello location, she’s inviting guests to come see for themselves once the store is finished and officially opens next week.

“The animatronics are a huge commodity, especially in this area,” Ledvina said. “People will get on waiting lists. People love to decorate in this area. Idaho is one of the top states for Halloween.”

Regarding other home decor items, Ledvina says ghostly or gothic bathroom and kitchen items are extremely popular among shoppers and are often some of the first to go. She always recommends that her customers check for items weekly when the store gets in new shipments, especially since stock for certain items can be limited.

As always, one of the greatest draws of Spirit Halloween is its costume section, which is packed to the brim with popular and topical franchises while still highlighting the contemporary classics — vampires, werewolves, witches and slasher villains.

“Ghostface is always a huge seller,” Ledvina said. “The first question I always ask is, ‘What’s your favorite scary movie?’ Because if you’re working at Spirit Halloween, you love the spookies. Spirit also recognizes that Ghostface is a very popular item, especially with ‘Scary Movie’ just coming back out and we just had ‘Scream 7’ come out last year, so they definitely look towards what the people want. I know Jason is a big one being pushed this year because he’s coming back, there’s that new TV show that’s coming out, ‘Crystal Lake.’”

For the kids, staples like “Paw Patrol” are always popular along with classics like “SpongeBob” and “Scooby-Doo.” 2000s trends are also resurging, and Ledvina hinted at possible Y2K-inspired costumes and outfits.

Outside of Pocatello, Idaho Spirit Halloween locations will include Rexburg and two locations in Idaho Falls, though plans are still emerging. The Rexburg location will be just off Main Street in the area near the Dollar Store, Hobby Lobby, McDonald’s and Ross. The Idaho Falls location will be on 17th Street near Ammon, next door to Michaels in the old Downeast Outfitters.

If all goes to plan, the second Idaho Falls location will be at the old Cal Ranch by Fred Meyer on Anderson Street.

Ledvina says Spirit Halloween management and associates are always happy to accommodate guests. Patrons can always inquire about specific outfits or sizes they are seeking, and staff can reach out to the other area Spirit Halloween locations if certain costumes, items or animatronics aren’t available in town.

In keeping with Spirit Halloween’s focus on its customers and biggest fans, the company also has a nonprofit called Spirit of Children that gives back to local children’s hospitals.

“It’s a really fantastic program that they put on,” Ledvina said. “100 percent of what we raise in our store goes to the local hospital. Ours is Shriners Children down in Salt Lake, and a lot of us are very passionate about it. They even throw those kids a party on their own dime as well to get them costumes. They help build costumes around their wheelchairs. It’s a very uplifting experience.”

Regarding Spirit Halloween’s greatly anticipated return, Ledvina expressed gratitude to people like Robert Lau and Catherine Willis, who helped bring the business to cities across the Gem State, along with the support of the city of Pocatello and the local community.
