RIRIE — Two teenagers found themselves stranded on a cliff above the Snake River Thursday evening near Ririe after their inflatable kayak snagged on trees, deflated and dumped them into the water.

Bonneville County sheriff’s deputies launched from the Byington Boat Ramp around 8 p.m. after receiving a call that the two teens had become separated from a larger group floating the river. The group had originally put in at the Burns Creek area earlier in the day.

Deputies located the teenagers just after dark, stranded on a rocky cliff near the Fullmer boat access. The pair had been wearing life jackets — which likely saved their lives — but were shoeless, soaking wet and extremely cold by the time deputies reached them. No significant injuries were reported.

The rescue is the latest in a string of water incidents on the Snake River this season. Bonneville County deputies are warning the public that current conditions on the river are particularly hazardous — water levels are running high and fast, temperatures are dangerously cold and spring runoff has left the river choked with debris.

Several local rescues this year have involved vessels that couldn’t withstand the rocks, trees and other hazards the river presents at high water.

“Because emergencies can happen in an instant, deputies recommend wearing a life jacket at all times,” the Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies are also urging anyone planning to float or boat the Snake River to honestly assess their experience level, check current water conditions beforehand and make sure their equipment is up to the challenge. Inflatable kayaks and rafts in particular may not be adequate for the river’s current conditions.
