Two people died and at least two others were injured in three separate crashes across the region on Thursday.

A 63-year-old Layton, Utah, man died Thursday afternoon after crashing the semi-truck he was driving on Interstate 15 in south Pocatello, Idaho State Police said.

The crash occurred at 1:11 p.m. when the man, driving a 2020 Volvo tractor-trailer northbound on I-15 near mile marker 63 in the area of the Portneuf exit veered off the right shoulder, struck a hillside, overturned and came to rest atop a guardrail, state police said.

The man was wearing a seatbelt but died at the scene. He was the only occupant of the semi and no other vehicles were involved in the crash. His name has not been released pending notification of next of kin by the Bannock County Coroner’s Office.

State police temporarily diverted all northbound traffic off the interstate at the Inkom exit while towing crews righted the semi. The left northbound lane reopened around 7:30 p.m. and the right lane reopened at 8:30 p.m.

Hours later, a second fatal crash claimed the life of a Montpelier man on a rural stretch of U.S. Highway 89 in Bear Lake County.

Ricky Tueller, 72, died at the scene of the crash, which occurred at 4:58 p.m. just outside Ovid — a small community southwest of Montpelier — authorities said.

Tueller was driving a 2019 GMC Savana van northbound when it collided head-on with a southbound 2022 GMC Yukon SUV driven by a juvenile from Ovid. The juvenile was transported by ground ambulance to Bear Lake Memorial Hospital in Montpelier. The youth’s condition has not been disclosed. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts.

The collision blocked both lanes of Highway 89 for approximately three hours as emergency crews worked the scene. Idaho State Police were assisted by the Bear Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Bear Lake County Fire Department, Bear Lake Search and Rescue and Bear Lake Ambulance Service.

Earlier in the day, two drivers were extricated from their vehicles after crashes along U.S. Highway 20 near Osborne Bridge in Fremont County. Just before 8 a.m., dispatchers received calls about crashes between mileposts 378 and 380 near Bull Moose Lane along Henry’s Fork.

“During the original accident, a secondary T-bone accident occurred in the same location,” said Fremont County Chief Deputy Cody Gudmunson.

Both drivers were transported to area hospitals. The extent of their injuries have not been released. Icy roads from recent snowfall are believed to have contributed to the crashes.

“We encourage all drivers to slow down and be prepared for ever-changing Idaho weather,” Gudmunson said.

All three crashes remain under investigation.
