NAMPA — A Nampa woman has been charged with five counts of felony injury to a child following a police investigation of allegations she was abusing a 9-year-old child.

Kimberly Ruiz, 27, also faces one count of felony witness intimidation in a criminal or juvenile case.

Nampa Police arrested Ruiz on Wednesday after receiving a report earlier this month from the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare’s child protective services, said Nampa Police Sgt. Tim Riha. The abuse was physical in nature, Riha said.

According to a probable cause affidavit, police were told by a CPS worker, a nurse and doctor at CARES, in Boise, that the girl had marks, bruises and scars on her body. Each of the bruises and scars appeared to be in different healing stages, indicating she had more than one injury incident. The marks, bruises and scabs also appeared non-accidental, according to the affidavit.

The alleged abuse occurred at Ruiz’s home in the 1500 block of North Grand Pine Way.

The girl reportedly had bruising to both sides of her face, a large scab and bruising on upper right shoulder, a large bruise on the backside of her left shoulder or upper back area, and deep and dark bruising around her ears, according to the probable cause affidavit.

In an interview with police, Ruiz called the bruising accidental, according to the document. Later, Ruiz said some of it may have come from discipline, including spanking her with flip-flop sandals. Ruiz reportedly told police that she told the child not to tell anyone because the family could be torn apart if authorities found out.

The child reportedly told police that Ruiz has “smacked” her in the face with her hand, “banged” her head against walls, and punched her in the nose with a fist, which caused her nose to bleed, according to the affidavit.

The doctor who examined the child characterized the injuries as “torture,” according to the document.

Ruiz was booked into Canyon County jail and her bond is set at $100,000.

Her next court appearance is set for 8:30 a.m. Nov. 10.
