Arson is believed to have caused a structure fire Saturday that sent one person to the hospital.

At approximately 6:30 p.m., fire crews responded to 164 Rosewood Drive in Rexburg, where they found smoke coming from the eaves and heavy smoke inside, the Madison Fire Department reported in a news release.

“Crews made entry into the house to begin offensive fire attack and found fire in four separate locations, both upstairs and downstairs. One person was transported to Madison Memorial Hospital,” the release stated.

The fire department dispatched three engines, two ambulances and two command vehicles. Sixteen firefighters worked the scene, assisted by the Rexburg Police Department.

“Total loss and damages are estimated to be $400,000. No firefighters were injured,” the release stated.

The fire was one of several the department has responded to recently.

“This spring, Madison Fire Department has been especially busy, so we ask the public to be especially mindful about fire-related activities, whether that’s controlled burns or recreational fires,” said David Ivey, battalion chief of C Shift at Madison Fire Department.

Structure fires require a response from all on-duty personnel.

“During this time, we rely on off-duty responders to handle additional calls for service,” the release stated.

The department also encouraged residents interested in joining to apply.
