Record-breaking high temps are in the forecast for much of East Idaho on Tuesday and Wednesday as the region descends further into severe drought.

The National Weather Service reports that daytime highs Tuesday and Wednesday could be as much as 15 to 20 degrees above normal in East Idaho’s lowlands, meaning there’s a chance records could be broken each day.

Daytime temps across East Idaho’s lower elevations including the Pocatello, Idaho Falls, Rexburg and Burley areas could reach the low 90s on Tuesday and Wednesday, warm enough to break records.

The warming trend began to take hold Sunday and Monday, when temps in East Idaho reached the high 70s and low 80s. While those temps were above normal, no records were broken either day in East Idaho, the weather service said.

The National Weather Service said more hot and dry weather is expected in the long-term 90 day forecast.

During that time the forecast is calling for above normal temperatures and below normal precipitation in East Idaho.

Considering that East Idaho is already mired in a severe drought, the situation will likely get worse before it improves.

Water shortages and the increasing wildfire threat will not let up as East Idaho enters the summer months.

The weather service said that the winter of 2025-2026 including the months of December, January, February and March was the warmest ever on record in East Idaho.

This past winter also saw the lowest snowfall totals ever in most East Idaho cities.

Pocatello, for example, received only 13.9 inches of snow, its lowest amount ever, the weather service said. The Gate City’s previous lowest snowfall amount was 15.8 inches in the winter of 2011-2012.

As for the rest of this week, temps will drop beginning Thursday but no significant precipitation is in the forecast anytime soon.

The colder temps are forecast to worsen through early next week in East Idaho, with conditions Sunday and Monday mornings expected to be near freezing, the weather service said.
