Bystanders on the beach at Bear Lake are being credited with saving a woman’s life after she was struck by a boat propeller in a harrowing accident that left her with the traumatic loss of both legs.

The woman, in her mid-30s, was tubing behind a boat July 11 when the boat’s propeller struck her, according to the Bear Lake County Sheriff’s Office. The boat with her on board rushed to shore for help, with people aboard calling out for assistance as it approached, according to KSL’s reporting.

Bystanders on the beach responded immediately, using a tourniquet one of them had on hand and improvising with a strap to address her injuries before first responders arrived roughly 10 to 15 minutes later, KSL reported. The woman remained conscious throughout the ordeal, according to KSL.

The Sheriff’s Office credited the bystanders’ swift action with saving the woman’s life.

“These actions ultimately saved her life,” the sheriff’s office said in a release.

The incident happened on the east side of Bear Lake north of the Idaho-Utah border.

The woman was airlifted via emergency helicopter from the scene to a hospital for treatment. She has since undergone multiple surgeries and remains hospitalized as she begins what a GoFundMe campaign set up to support her family describes as a long road of healing, rehabilitation and rebuilding her life. She is a wife and mother of three children, ages 16, 8 and 2.

As of Thursday, the GoFundMe campaign had raised more than $69,000 to support the woman and her family.

At the family’s request, both the Sheriff’s Office and the fundraiser’s organizers are withholding her identity. Her family said she is in stable condition.

The accident remains under investigation by the Bear Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
