If money is an issue, Kelly Smith said kitchen refacing can add new style to existing cabinets at about half the cost of replacing them.

Smith, owner of 2K Kitchen Refacing, said with fewer new construction jobs coming up for bid, he started looking for a way to market his skills. While kitchen refacing has been a practical alternative in other areas for some time, the process is still not widespread in Pocatello.

During kitchen makeovers, cabinet doors and drawers are removed and a veneer skin is applied to the existing frame and stained.

Real wood is then attached to the cabinets face frame and new drawer fronts are installed.

"What you see is all new," Smith said. "Sometimes there is nothing wrong with the kitchen, you just get tired of looking at the wood."

Smith also replaces drawer rollers and hardware if needed and said most kitchens can be completed in about one week with little mess.

Replacing cabinets with new ones is more involved.

"With a new kitchen, it all has to be taken out," he said.

2K Kitchen Refacing can match most existing wood cabinets and also does bathrooms, furniture, trim and molding and shelving.

Smith said refacing can be done on almost any surface and works with existing fixtures and appliances.

"We can work within any budget as well," he said.

For homeowners looking to sell, Smith said a quick kitchen makeover is often the key to catching a buyer's eye.

"We can do a makeover for $1,000 to $1,500," Smith said.
