POCATELLO — Security cameras helped officers arrest two local men in their 40s on theft charges earlier this month, capturing one breaking into a residence and stealing tools and another stealing hundreds of dollars worth of perfume from a local beauty store, police say.

Michael Flyger Wallace, 47, of Pocatello, has been charged with felony burglary and misdemeanor petit theft following a Pocatello police investigation that unfolded the evening of March 16, according to police and court records the Idaho State Journal recently obtained.

The incident began around 7:56 p.m. when a store employee at Ulta Beauty, located at 4150 Yellowstone Ave. in Pocatello, contacted police to report a theft in progress involving two men and a woman, police said. Officers arrived and a store employee directed them to a man, later identified as Wallace, and a woman standing at the checkout counter, according to the report.

Officers asked Wallace to empty his pockets and he placed a wallet, phone and cigarettes on the counter, according to the report.

Officers reviewed security footage and observed Wallace conceal multiple perfume bottles on his person and exit the store, police said.

When confronted, Wallace admitted taking two bottles and retrieved them from his backpack, according to the report.

Security footage showed he had also taken a third bottle, which officers located in the trunk of a vehicle parked outside, police said. The three perfume bottles were valued at $417, according to the report. Officers noted Wallace had only $6 in cash on him at the time of his arrest, police said.

Wallace was arrested and transported to the Bannock County Jail in Pocatello.

In a separate incident, John Otto Andersen, 46, of Pocatello, has been charged with one count of felony burglary and one count of misdemeanor petit theft following a Pocatello police investigation that unfolded the morning of March 13, according to police and court records the Idaho State Journal recently obtained.

The incident began around 10 a.m. when a homeowner contacted police to report a burglary in progress at her Pocatello residence, police said. The woman told officers a man had entered through the back door, grabbed a red nylon tool bag full of tools and left the area in a black Chevrolet pickup truck with a camper shell attached, according to the report. The incident was completely captured on video surveillance from the residence, police said.

Officers identified Andersen as a possible suspect and located the vehicle in Chubbuck, according to the report. A sergeant followed the vehicle back to a residence where Andersen was observed parking the truck behind the residential garage in what officers believed was an attempt to conceal it, police said. Multiple Pocatello police officers and two Chubbuck police officers responded to that residence and contacted Andersen, according to the report.

Andersen told officers he had entered the residence believing it was an abandoned property, police said. He admitted to removing the red tool bag and told officers he had placed the tools in a shed outside a neighboring residence, according to the report.

Andersen was arrested and transported to the Bannock County Jail.

Anderson appeared before 6th District Magistrate Judge David A. Hooste for an arraignment hearing on March 16 where his bond was set at $10,000. He posted the bond on March 17 and was released from jail.

He is scheduled to appear in court again on Thursday for a preliminary hearing. Prosecutors will attempt to present sufficient evidence to elevate the case from magistrate to district court for trial.

Anderson appeared before 6th District Magistrate Judge David W. Cousin for an arraignment hearing on March 17 where his bond was set at $15,000.

He is due back in court on March 31 for a preliminary hearing.

If convicted of the felony burglary charges, Andersen and Wallace both face between one and 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000.

Prosecutors also gave notice that they intend to seek a Persistent Violator enhancement against Anderson based on his previous felony convictions, which could extend any prison sentence levied against him by no less than five years and up to life in prison.
