POCATELLO — A man shot himself shortly before Pocatello police arrived at his residence Tuesday night to perform a welfare check on him, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 8:45 p.m. at a residence on West Quinn Road in north Pocatello.

Police said they had been notified by a concerned family member to check on the man. The concerns were heightened because the man's children were with him in the residence.

Shortly before officers arrived at the home, the man exited the residence and shot himself, police said.

Responding officers quickly found the wounded man and began administering first aid. A Pocatello Fire Department ambulance was immediately called to the scene and rushed the man to Portneuf Medical Center.

The man is believed to be in critical condition, authorities said.

The man's children were inside the residence when he shot himself and were not injured, police said.

The incident remains under investigation by Pocatello police.
