POCATELLO — A suspected drunk driver fleeing from police crashed into two parked vehicles belonging to Jim Dandy Brewing early Sunday morning, likely totaling the establishment’s iconic 1974 AM General FJ-8 General Dandy Wagon.

Daniel Benjamin Roswell, 24, a New Zealand man living in Pocatello, has been charged with felony eluding along with misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence and resisting and obstructing an officer following the Nov. 30 incident, according to police and court records the Idaho State Journal recently obtained.

The incident began to unfold around 2 a.m. when Pocatello police spotted the driver of a red Dodge Charger, later identified as Roswell, driving northbound on South Fifth Avenue near East Bonneville Street without his headlights or taillights illuminated, police said.

After the officer activated his emergency lights and sirens, Roswell fled at a high rate of speed, winding through East Historic Downtown Pocatello streets in what police described as a “careless and reckless manner” — all the while still without lights, the report says.

The officer discontinued the chase near the bar district due to the dangerous speeds and concerns for pedestrians leaving the closing establishments, police said.

After ending the pursuit, officers continued to search the area and ultimately located Roswell’s Charger, which had crashed into parked trailers in the Carpet One parking lot but was unoccupied , the report says.

Upon checking the vehicle, the officer located a black wallet on the driver’s side floorboard that contained his New Zealand driver’s license, police said.

Officers later located Roswell walking on Pocatello Avenue with injuries consistent with both airbag deployment and seatbelt rash from the crash and arrested him after breathalyzer tests showed he had blood alcohol levels of 0.198 and 0.193 — more than twice Idaho’s legal limit of 0.08, the report says.

The owners of Jim Dandy Brewing have provided officers with video camera footage of the red Dodge Charger crashing into their parked vehicles in the lot along North Second Avenue adjacent to their building and evidence of the collision, including the car’s front bumper was located at the scene. Officers are continuing to investigate the incident, police said.

Jim Dandy wrote about the damage to both the AM General and another one of its trucks on Facebook around 10:30 a.m. Sunday morning, calling the Dandy Wagon “truly irreplaceable” and “a familiar, well-loved icon” that had been part of the restaurant since it opened in 2018.

“The damage is extensive, and the Dandy Wagon is more than likely totaled,” the Facebook post said.

Jim Dandy owners are trying to determine the owner of the Dodge Charger as they work with insurance companies to identify the total cost of damages,

Roswell appeared before 6th District Magistrate Judge David A Hooste for an arraignment hearing on Monday, where his bond was set at $10,000.

He remains incarcerated as of Friday afternoon and is scheduled to appear in court again on Dec. 10 for a preliminary hearing. Prosecutors will attempt to present sufficient evidence to elevate the case from magistrate to district court for trial.

If convicted of felony eluding, Roswell faces a potential sentence of up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000.
