POCATELLO — Police and firefighters rescued two injured people and a dog from a motorhome that plunged into the Portneuf River near downtown Pocatello late Wednesday afternoon.

The incident occurred around 4:45 p.m. when the 1977 Beaver Monterey motorhome was heading eastbound on West Bonneville Street, crashed through the guardrail where the street dead ends at the Portneuf River and then landed on its wheels in the shallow river, police said.

The local man who was driving the motorhome said he was unable to stop the vehicle because its brakes failed.

Police and firefighters responded to the scene and used ladders to reach the motorhome sitting in the river. They then cut a hole in the roof of the motorhome so that the man, his adult female passenger and their dog could be rescued from the vehicle.

Police said the man and woman suffered injuries in the crash but are expected to survive. They were both transported via Pocatello Fire Department ambulances to Portneuf Medical Center after being rescued. Their names haven’t been released.

The dog was not injured during the incident and is currently being cared for at the Pocatello Animal Shelter.

The heavily damaged motorhome remained in the river until Wednesday night when it was removed by a wrecker.

The incident remains under investigation by Pocatello police.
