BLACKFOOT — In an extraordinarily rare occurrence, the Blackfoot Airport was the scene of two separate plane crashes Saturday — one that ended in tragedy and another hours earlier where the pilot escaped serious injury.

The later of the two crashes left one person dead, two others injured and a city street shut down.

Authorities have identified the person who died as Caden West, 27, of Pocatello.

At approximately 11 p.m. Saturday, Blackfoot police responded to the crash on the north end of the Blackfoot Airport. The aircraft came to rest across Teeples Drive, scattering debris that blocked the roadway.

There were three people aboard, authorities said. West, who was the pilot, died at the scene. His two adult male passengers were transported via ambulances to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls for treatment of injuries. Their names and conditions have not been released.

Blackfoot police said they are working with the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board to investigate the crash.

Teeples Drive is expected to remain closed for several hours because of the incident, police said. Drivers are being asked to avoid the area until the road fully reopens.

Emergency traffic in the area should use the gravel access road from South Von Elm Drive when leaving the Champions Gate subdivision, and residents needing to access Champions Gate are asked to use the gravel road at 100 North from Rose Road — a route police stressed is intended for residents only.

Police said no further information will be released regarding the crash at this time.

The late Saturday night crash came hours after a very different outcome at the same airport.

Around 8:30 a.m. Saturday, a Blackfoot pilot's single-engine plane struck a berm near the runway while landing, flipping the aircraft upside down.

Remarkably, the pilot walked away with only minor injuries and didn't require transport to the hospital, authorities said. He was the plane's only occupant, and his name has not been released.

That crash also remains under investigation.

The Blackfoot police and fire departments responded to both incidents.
