POCATELLO — A fire at a south Pocatello home displaced the residents who lived there and left one person injured and a cat dead, authorities said.

The blaze devoured much of the residence on the 4900 block of Cherokee Street, destroyed an SUV and kept firefighters busy for hours.

The fire started in the attached garage of the single-story home around 11:25 p.m. Monday, authorities said.

The Pocatello Fire Department responded and immediately began battling the flames. Firefighters contained the fire by around midnight but parts of the home continued to burn and smolder into the early morning hours.

The residents who lived in the home reported the fire before they and their dog exited the burning residence but their cat died in the blaze, authorities said.

An adult male resident of the home was transported via Pocatello Fire Department ambulance to Portneuf Medical Center for treatment of minor smoke inhalation, the Fire Department said.

The fire gutted the garage and damaged the roof and some of the rest of the home before firefighters stopped its spread. The entire residence suffered heavy smoke damage as well.

An SUV parked in the garage was destroyed by the fire and a utility trailer and pickup truck parked outside the home were damaged, firefighters said.

Pocatello police also responded to the blaze and temporarily shut down Cherokee Street and limited traffic on nearby Bannock Highway to make room for the several fire trucks on the scene.

As a precaution police temporarily evacuated a home next to the one that caught fire, but firefighters kept the flames from spreading to the adjacent residence.

Authorities said they aren’t sure if the home where the fire occurred can be salvaged.

Firefighters said the home is insured.

Authorities said the four adults who resided at the home and their dog are staying with family for now.

The Fire Department remained on the scene until around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday making sure the fire was out and investigating how it started.

Authorities said more information on what caused the blaze could be released by the middle of next week.
