The Pocatello Fire Department installed 102 smoke detectors in homes on the city’s Westside last weekend.

Assistant Fire Chief Tom Sanford said firefighters went door to door on Garfield, Hayes and Grant streets between West Fremont and West Custer Streets.

Sanford said crews checked existing smoke detectors, replaced batteries and installed detectors when they were needed.

Smoke detectors should be placed outside each sleeping area and on every level of a home.

The National Fire Protection Association recommends testing smoke detectors monthly and replacing them every 10 years.

Sanford said patrons who need a smoke alarm can get one for free at getasmokealarm.org.
