NAMPA — A more than six-hour-long armed standoff came to an end peacefully Tuesday afternoon after an armed woman surrendered to police, according to Nampa Police Sgt. Tim Riha.

Susan Swan, 48, of Caldwell was taken into custody around 4:30 p.m. following the standoff at a residence on the 1300 block of South Garland Street.

Police arrived at 9:46 a.m. Tuesday to a report that Swan had an active felony warrant. When police arrived she barricaded herself inside the house.

A gunshot was heard from inside early into the standoff. Swan, who carried a rifle, exited and entered the house multiple times during the standoff, according to a press release from the Nampa Police Department. Riha said the woman brandished the gun at officers but did not fire.

No other people were in the house.

Two police officers around 1:25 p.m. were standing behind a police vehicle with guns drawn and pointed toward the residence. Officers were continuing to try to negotiate with the suspect, Nampa Police Capt. Curt Shankel said.

“We’re just trying to get her out, we just want a peaceful resolution,” he said.

Officers spoke with Swan over the phone and deployed a drone, which Officer Aaron Coleman said is “part of the norm to get an overview of everything.”

At about 3 p.m. Idaho Power arrived on scene and shut off power to the residence. Power is sometimes shut off to make a suspect uncomfortable during standoffs, according to Riha.

During the standoff, police blocked traffic on Garland Street, Sunnyridge Road and Florida and Hawaii avenues. The nearby Skyview High School was not placed on lockdown.

Swan was booked into the Canyon County jail on a failure to appear warrant. Riha said he did not have details on what case the warrant Swan was booked into the jail came from.

According to the Idaho courts online repository, a bond of $15,000 was set on Sept. 12 for failing to appear for a hearing in a 2017 criminal case. She was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor injury to child, possession of controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.

Swan was also set to appear for a sentencing in 3rd District Court at 9 a.m. Tuesday on two other cases involving drug charges. In one case she pleaded guilty to felony possession of a controlled substance. In the other, she pleaded guilty to misdemeanor obstructing an officer. Those sentencings were continued to January, according to the repository.
