POCATELLO — Museum of Clean officials are seeking community feedback on a name change for their building to better reflect its role as a community gathering place while retaining the legacy of founder Don Aslett.

Aslett, a local entrepreneur and cleaning icon who died in August 2024 at age 89, founded the Museum of Clean in 2011. Known as the “Sultan of Shine,” “Dean of Clean” and “Captain Commode,” among other colorful nicknames, Aslett built a cleaning empire and authored more than 40 books on cleanliness or entrepreneurship before his death.

Area residents are being asked to provide feedback through an online survey on a new name that reflects the spirit and legacy of the gift Aslett left behind, allows flexibility for future growth and partnerships, feels inclusive and welcoming to the community and supports long-term sustainability.

“What spurred the thought of the name change is the building has grown into much more than just the one museum that it originally was,” said Jessica Desfosses, Museum of Clean board member.

In the past few years, the Museum of Clean has welcomed the My World Discovery children’s museum into its building while adding a coffeehouse, gift shop and event center available for rent.

“A lot of times, our executive director will let people use (the event center) for free or (rent it) very cheaply,” Desfosses said. “It’s a lot of space that’s pretty much open for the community to use. This building is essentially a gift to the community from Don Aslett. The changes that we’re making, we want it to feel open and inclusive to the people of Pocatello. We want a name that’s more going in that direction and not just focused on the Museum of Clean. The Museum of Clean will still be in the building, but the building will cover more of a broad spectrum.”

Museum officials are open to whatever suggestions the community has for a new name, leaning toward something that emphasizes their push for a communal gathering space.

“The one that I came up with was The Aslett Commons or The Aslett Community Commons,” Desfosses said. “That pays tribute to Don Aslett and his legacy and then makes it feel welcoming to the community. But honestly, at this point, we are open to whatever the community wants to suggest.”

Aslett, who co-founded Varsity Contractors in 1957, grew the cleaning company to employ 2,500 workers across 14 states by 1990. He also started the Clean World Foundation in 2009 to improve quality of life for vulnerable populations worldwide by increasing access to water, sanitation and hygiene.

Board members will review the submitted feedback and determine the new name and rebrand sometime in March.
