A 61-year-old man from Meridian died when the U-Haul vehicle he was in exploded Saturday morning in the parking lot of a Lewiston shopping center.

The explosion happened just after 7 a.m. Saturday at the northeast corner of Nez Perce Plaza near Old Navy. No video of the blast had surfaced as of Saturday evening, but it apparently caused an enormous boom. People all over the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley and beyond reported on social media that they heard it; the U-Haul was mangled almost beyond recognition, and debris from the vehicle landed far away or nestled high up in the branches of trees.

The man who died was Douglas R. Petersen, according to the Nez Perce County Coroner. He was the only one in the vehicle, and there were apparently no other injuries.

The explosion was caused by a propane leak within the cargo box of the U-Haul, according to an investigation by Lewiston Fire and police officials. What sparked the blast couldn’t be determined, according to investigators.

Besides propane, there was also gasoline in the U-Haul, according to officials. There wasn’t a fire after the explosion.

The investigation found no evidence of criminal or intentional causes of the blast.
