Accidental shooting

Two men were wounded Wednesday afternoon in Meridian during an accidental shooting that occurred while one of the men was handling a holstered handgun.

A man who was handling a handgun inside a Meridian garage on Wednesday afternoon accidentally shot himself and another man, according to police.

At 2:15 p.m., paramedics and police were called to a report of shots fired in the 1500 block of Ionia Street, near Locust Grove Road.

Both men were hospitalized for their injuries — one was shot in hand, the other in the abdomen — but both are expected to be OK, Meridian Police Lt. Jeff Brown said Wednesday night.

“No major organs were struck,” Brown said of the man hit in the abdomen.

The gun discharged just one time, police said.

Brown said one of the men was handling the gun inside a holster when it went off; he wasn’t wearing the holster at the time. There was no evidence of an altercation, police said.

The men’s names have not been released. Police are still investigating.
