HEYBURN — A 76-year-old Heyburn man died in a Sunday afternoon SUV crash that brought traffic on Interstate 84 to a standstill, Idaho State Police said.

The man was driving a 2024 Land Rover Defender eastbound on Interstate 84 west of Heyburn around 2 p.m. when the vehicle drifted off the left shoulder and struck an embankment, causing it to overturn, authorities said.

The driver, who was wearing a seatbelt, was airlifted via emergency helicopter to a local hospital where he died from his injuries, state police said. His name has not been released.

The crash completely shut down Interstate 84 for approximately two hours.

Idaho State Police were assisted by the Minidoka County Sheriff's Office, Heyburn Police Department, Cassia County Sheriff's Office, West End Fire Department, Idaho Transportation Department and Minidoka Memorial Emergency Response Ambulance.

The crash remains under investigation.
