CHUBBUCK — A 23-year-old local man was recently arrested after police say he threatened a Chubbuck woman with a machete during a dispute at their shared residence.

Dylan Alexander Wardell, of Chubbuck, has been charged with one count of felony aggravated assault following a Chubbuck police investigation that unfolded the morning of March 11, according to police and court records the Idaho State Journal recently obtained.

The incident began around 8:35 a.m. when a 911 caller reported a disturbance at a Chubbuck residence, advising that a man had come into a woman’s room with a machete, police said. Officers responded in an expedited manner with lights and sirens activated, according to the report.

Upon arriving at the scene, a woman exited the front door and told officers she did not know where the machete was, but that Wardell had been waving it in her face, police said. A short time later Wardell came out of the residence with what appeared to be a toy set of handcuffs already on his wrists, according to the report. Officers took him into custody and a search of his pockets turned up nothing of interest, police said.

The woman told officers that she and Wardell were roommates and that when she had returned home from work after 8 a.m. she discovered one of her cats covered in feces, which she believed Wardell had caused, police said.

When she confronted Wardell about the cat, he became very angry, the report says. After she went to her room he returned with a machete in his hand and stood over her as she sat on her bed, pointing the blade at her face, causing her to become very afraid he was going to harm her with it, police said. She also told offvicers that Wardell then attempted to hand her the machete and told her to cut him, according to the report.

After being read his Miranda rights, Wardell told officers he and the woman had argued about the cat and that he was sick of her and never wanted to see her again, police said. Wardell acknowledged pointing the machete at her but told officers he never intended to harm her and that when asked whether he understood how his actions might have appeared, he said he did see how it would come across that he was going to hurt her, according to the report.

Wardell gave officers consent to retrieve the machete from his bedroom closet, where it was located in a box with the handle sticking out, police said. It was submitted into evidence, according to the report.

He appeared before 6th District Magistrate Adam Strong for an arraignment hearing on March 12 where his bond was set at $10,000 and a no-contact order was issued between him and the victim. He posted the bond on March 16 and was released from jail.

Wardell is scheduled to appear in court again on Wednesday for a preliminary hearing. Prosecutors will attempt to present sufficient evidence to elevate the case from magistrate to district court for trial.

If convicted of the felony aggravated assault charge, Wardell faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000.
