Bryan Kohberger has received “five figures” of dollars while he’s been incarcerated, according to Ada County District Court Judge Steven Hippler.

Questions of how convicted murderer Kohberger could receive money in prison arose during a Wednesday court hearing in Ada County District Court.

The hearing centered around whether Kohberger should pay more restitution to cover funeral expenses for the victims of the Nov. 13, 2022, Moscow quadruple murders.

Specifically, the prosecution is requesting money for the purchase of urns, which include $1,420 for the Goncalves family and $1,587 for Karen Laramie, the mother of Madison Mogen.

Ada County District Judge Steven Hippler will take the matter under advisement and issue an order soon.

Kohberger attorney Elisa Massoth reiterated the defendant’s argument that he has no ability to pay the money while he remains in prison during his four consecutive life sentences.

However, Latah County Prosecutor Bill Thompson said Kohberger had already received “significant monies” from members of the public, though no specifics were revealed.

Hippler later said Kohberger already received “five figures” while incarcerated.

During the course of the conversation, there was a question as to whether Kohberger can financially benefit from any movies, TV shows or books about the crimes.

Idaho code says the Idaho Treasurer’s Office can collect any money a convict receives from these sources and distribute that money to the victims.

According to Hippler, however, that may not stop Kohberger’s family members from collecting profits from a book or movie deal and sending it to Kohberger’s prison account.

In an email to the Daily News, Thompson said he and his staff “really aren’t in a position to opine” on whether Idaho code allows Kohberger’s family members to do this.

According to IMDB and other news reports, Lifetime is already planning a movie about the Moscow murders with a cast already in place to play Kohberger and the victims.

The prosecution initially planned to argue for more restitution to cover travel expenses for the victims’ families. However, Thompson said that was based on a misunderstanding about what reimbursements the Idaho’s Crime Victims Compensation Program could provide the families. On Wednesday, Thompson stated that his office is now only advocating for extra restitution to pay for funeral expenses.

The families have received thousands of dollars from several GoFundMe campaigns to cover travel expenses, according to court documents.
