POCATELLO — Idaho State University has recognized Tonya Wilkes as a recipient of the National Girls and Women in Sports Award, an honor presented to local women in the Pocatello community who demonstrate outstanding dedication to empowering women and creating meaningful opportunities for girls in sports.

The award celebrates individuals whose leadership, advocacy and commitment have positively impacted athletics and youth development, according to a news release from Pocatello-Chubbuck School District 25.

ISU is highlighting selected women and their lasting contributions to the community. Earlier this month, the university presented Wilkes with a certificate recognizing her exceptional service to schools and youth across the region.

Wilkes serves as director of student support services and athletics for School District 25. She was selected for the districtwide leadership role in 2019 after a distinguished career as an administrator at Irving Middle School, where she served for 10 years, the news release said.

Her tenure included serving as principal from 2013 to 2019 and as athletic director and vice principal from 2008 to 2013. Throughout her career, Wilkes has remained committed to building strong relationships and fostering collaboration among learners, staff, families and the broader community.

Wilkes earned a Bachelor of Science in secondary math and science in 1995, a master’s degree in athletic administration in 1999 and a second master’s degree in education administration in 2007.

Her experience in education includes 12 years of teaching at Blackfoot High School and two years at Pocatello High School. She has also coached varsity softball, varsity volleyball, varsity basketball and middle school track. Wilkes said she believes student success is cultivated through meaningful relationships — a philosophy that has guided her work in every role.
