HEYBURN — A semi-truck barreled into a concrete barrier in an active construction zone on Interstate 84 Tuesday morning, blocking lanes and forcing emergency crews to scramble to keep traffic moving in Heyburn, Idaho State Police said.

The crash happened at 11:59 a.m. when a 1995 Freightliner traveling eastbound on the freeway struck a concrete barrier that was blocking the lane in the construction zone near milepost 211 in Minidoka County, authorities said. The semi's driver, a 33-year-old Jerome man, was not wearing a seat belt but walked away without injury, state police said.

Construction crews moved quickly to create an emergency lane on the right shoulder, allowing traffic to squeeze through the area while emergency responders worked the scene. As of Tuesday evening, some eastbound lanes remained blocked because of the crash and motorists were being advised to avoid the area.

Authorities said the crash would continue to cause major traffic congestion on Interstate 84 eastbound well into Tuesday night.

Idaho State Police were joined at the scene by the Idaho Department of Transportation, Minidoka County Sheriff's Office, Heyburn Fire Department and construction company personnel.

The crash remains under investigation by Idaho State Police.
