HEYBURN — A tanker truck burst into flames after a dramatic early morning crash on Interstate 84 near Heyburn Friday, closing both directions of the freeway and drawing a massive emergency response.

Idaho State Police responded at 1:50 a.m. after the eastbound 2025 International semi hauling an empty tanker trailer drifted off the right shoulder, struck a guardrail and part of a concrete wall before crossing all lanes of Interstate 84 and slamming into the north side of an overpass wall at North 950 East. The collision ignited the rig in flames, partially blocking the left eastbound lane.

The two men aboard — a 37-year-old driver and a 37-year-old passenger, both from El Paso, Texas — escaped the burning wreckage. Neither was injured. The driver was wearing a seatbelt, state police said.

As flames lit up the early morning darkness multiple fire departments converged on the scene and extinguished the blaze.

As a precaution authorities initially blocked both of the freeway's eastbound and westbound lanes while crews confirmed the tanker trailer was empty and posed no additional threat. Westbound lanes and the right eastbound lane were reopened relatively quickly but the left eastbound lane remained blocked for several hours while crews worked to remove the damaged semi and trailer.

Interstate 84 was fully reopened by 11 a.m. Friday.

The massive response included the Declo Fire Department, East End Fire Department, North Cassia Fire Department, Cassia Medics, Declo QRU, Idaho Transportation Department, Cassia County Sheriff's Office, Heyburn Police Department and Minidoka County Sheriff's Office.
