CHUBBUCK — A man died by suicide Wednesday night after an Idaho State Police trooper stopped him for a traffic violation in the Petco parking lot, authorities said.

The incident occurred shortly before 9 p.m. when the trooper observed a vehicle traveling southbound on Yellowstone Avenue without working taillights, according to a Chubbuck Police Department news release.

The driver pulled into the Petco parking lot, located near the Pine Ridge Mall. When the trooper contacted him and explained the reason for the stop, the man appeared extremely nervous, police said.

The trooper asked the man to exit the vehicle, but he refused and said he did not want to go to jail, said police, adding that he then pulled out a handgun and pointed it at himself.

The trooper initially tried to grab the gun, but the man resisted, resulting in the trooper stepping away from the vehicle, according to the news release. Moments later, the man shot himself, police said.

The trooper and other emergency responders who arrived performed life-saving measures before the man was transported via Pocatello Fire Department ambulance to Portneuf Medical Center, where he later died, police said.

The trooper was not injured.

The Chubbuck Police Department is investigating the incident and has obtained the trooper’s body-camera and in-car video, Chubbuck police said, adding that out of respect for the man’s family and friends, police will not release his name.

Pocatello and Chubbuck police, Bannock County sheriff’s deputies, and the Pocatello and Chubbuck fire departments also responded to the scene.
