After identifying three confirmed cases of Hepatitis A in the past five days, the Bear River Health Department Wednesday announced it is investigating an outbreak in Cache and Box Elder counties.

By way of a press release, the BRHD said it is “actively investigating the source of the illness and taking steps to limit further spread. Hepatitis A is a contagious liver infection caused by the Hep A virus and is typically spread through close personal contact or by consuming contaminated food or water.”

The BRHD cited the following symptoms as potentially appearing 2-7 weeks after exposure:

• Fatigue
• Fever
• Loss of appetite
• Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
• Abdominal pain
• Dark urine
• Pale or clay-colored stools
• Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)

“Some people, especially children, may have mild symptoms or none at all but can still spread the virus,” the press release states.

The BRHD encouraged anyone experiencing symptoms to contact their healthcare provider, adding those who are diagnosed should not prepare food for others and should follow medical guidance to avoid spreading the illness.

“The Hep A vaccine is the most effective way to prevent infection,” the release said. “Practicing good hand hygiene also helps prevent the spread of Hep A, including washing hands thoroughly with soap and water after using the restroom and before preparing or eating food. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers should not be used as a substitute for handwashing for this illness.”
