AMERICAN FALLS — A teenage girl was airlifted to a local hospital after falling down two embankments while fleeing on foot from an accident scene on Tuesday night, the Power County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The incident began to unfold around 10 p.m. when Power County sheriff’s deputies responded to a one-vehicle crash on Sparks Lane north of American Falls.

Upon their arrival, the deputies noticed several people walking around and a 16-year-old girl trying to flee from the scene, authorities said.

Knowing that the girl was running toward a steep embankment, a deputy told her to stop as he ran after her, the Sheriff’s Office reported.

The girl did not stop and ran off the embankment, falling approximately 50 feet, authorities said. She then got up, kept running and fell down a second embankment, where she remained due to her injuries, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The seriously injured girl was subsequently transported by Power County Emergency Medical Services ambulance to Power County Hospital in American Falls, from where she was airlifted via emergency helicopter to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls.

Her name hasn't been released but she's expected to survive.

The Sheriff’s Office added that several people were arrested at the scene of the accident and alcohol was a contributing factor.

Further details on who was arrested and what charges were filed have not been released.

The incident remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.
