POCATELLO — An armed suicidal man surrendered Sunday night after engaging police in a standoff for over two hours outside of Portneuf Medical Center. 

Authorities said the man was taken into custody without incident around 9:50 p.m., bringing to an end a tense confrontation between him and law enforcement officers from several agencies that resulted in PMC being locked down. Police said no shots were fired during the standoff and no one was injured.

The incident began to unfold around 7:20 p.m. when the man dialed 911 and told police that he was armed in the PMC parking lot and was going to hurt himself.

Responding Pocatello police officers found the man alone in his van in the PMC parking lot. He was armed with a handgun.

When the man refused to surrender, Bannock County sheriff's deputies, Chubbuck police and Idaho State Police were called in to reinforce Pocatello police.

All entrances into PMC's parking lot were blocked by law enforcement officers and the hospital went into lockdown, meaning no one could enter or leave. 

The Pocatello police SWAT team with an armored vehicle was deployed to the scene and police negotiators began communicating with the man.

Authorities said the man eventually decided to surrender and exited his vehicle, put down his firearm and placed his arms over his head.

Officers then took the man into custody and he is receiving mental health treatment. Police said no criminal charges are pending at this time.

Authorities have not provided the man's name or commented on what caused him to become suicidal. 

Although PMC remained on lockdown during the standoff, the hospital continued to accept emergency patients via a police escort from its north entrance to the emergency room. The lockdown was lifted after the man was taken into custody.

Hospital Way, the only road that provides access to PMC, was not shut down by police during the standoff, but police asked the public to avoid the area and it appeared that most residents obeyed the request.
