POCATELLO — An apartment building near downtown Pocatello caught fire late Tuesday night, displacing all of the residents who lived there and shutting down a city street.

The blaze at the three-story apartment building on the 300 block of North Hayes Avenue was reported around 11:10 p.m.

Pocatello police were the first on the scene and found smoke billowing from the building’s attic area.

The Pocatello Fire Department arrived moments later, made sure everyone had evacuated the building and began battling the flames.

The fire continued to burn throughout the night and it wasn’t until 8 a.m. Wednesday that the fire was fully extinguished and Fire Department investigators could enter the building.

The blaze did not result in any injuries and authorities said the building is likely salvageable, though the fire caused significant damage to the roof, attic and third floor.

The fire displaced all of the residents who lived in the building’s four apartments. The entire building suffered smoke and water damage but firefighters believe they saved most of the tenants’ belongings from the flames.

The fire started in the building’s attic and then spread to the roof and third floor, the Fire Department said.

During the blaze firefighters on the ground sprayed water from hoses onto the burning building while other firefighters accessed the roof via the Fire Department’s ladder truck and cut holes to ventilate the structure.

The Fire Department said the blaze was a difficult one to battle because the building had been remodeled multiple times and had crawl spaces and other difficult to access spots where the flames spread.

Firefighters kept the fire from spreading to any of the adjacent homes in the residential neighborhood near Pocatello High School.

The owner of the building has found temporary places for all of the tenants to stay, the Fire Department said.

Police shut down North Hayes for several hours because of the fire, and firefighters and investigators remained on the scene through most of Wednesday.

The Fire Department said at this point it appears the cause of the blaze was accidental and possibly electrical in nature but the investigation is ongoing.
