POCATELLO — A 31-year old local man accused of biting off a portion of a woman’s lip in January has been deemed fit to stand trial, court records show.

Quaytavious Daquan Geter, of Pocatello, was charged with mayhem, possession of a controlled substance and introduction of major contraband into a correctional facility in January following the incident, according to police and court records the Idaho State Journal recently obtained.

Geter is accused of biting off the portion of a woman’s lower lip during an argument that occurred at a Pocatello home during the afternoon of Jan. 17, police said. Officers were dispatched for the report of a woman bleeding from the face while screaming for help, according to the report. Officers arrived to find the victim with a severe lip injury, said police, adding that a neighbor reported hearing the woman yell for help.

A doorbell camera from another neighbor captured the woman running from a man later identified as Geter, while yelling, “you bit me,” the report says.

When confronted, Geter initially claimed an unknown man attacked the woman in their backyard, a statement police say was contradicted by the absence of footprints in fresh snow.

Upon his Jan. 21 arrest and transport to Bannock County Jail, deputies located 2.53 grams of suspected methamphetamine in Geter’s right shoe.

Geter’s bond was set at $50,000 and he has remained incarcerated since, court records show. His case was elevated to district court in February.

On April 25, Geter was ordered to undergo a competency evaluation that involved 6th District Judge Robert C. Naftz, suspending all proceedings against Geter so he could undergo examination by a Department of Health and Welfare psychiatrist or psychologist.

The examiner was required to report on Geter’s mental condition, his capacity to understand proceedings to assist in his defense and his ability to make informed decisions about treatment, court records show.

In July, it was determined Geter lacked fitness to proceed and he was committed to the custody of the Department of Health and Welfare for care and treatment for a period not exceeding 90 days, according to court records.

Earlier this month, the court found Geter was fit to proceed and the commitment was terminated, allowing proceedings to resume.

Naftz on Tuesday granted a motion to continue Geter’s next court appearance because his Pocatello attorney Craig Parrish would be out of town, rescheduling the Oct. 27 pre-trial conference for Nov. 17.

In Idaho, If someone unlawfully deprives another person of a body part, makes it useless, or cuts out or disables the tongue, puts out an eye, or slits the nose, ear or lip, that’s considered mayhem.

It’s punishable by up to 14 years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000

The two drug charges carry a combined maximum penalty of up to 12 years in prison and up to $25,000 in fines

Geter is set to take his case to trial on Dec. 9.
