AMMON — A police K-9 helped capture a Firth man Saturday night after he reportedly pointed a gun at residents and threatened to kill them, then ran and hid inside a camper on the property north of Ammon.

Bonneville County sheriff’s deputies were called to a residence on the 2000 block of North Ammon Road just after 10 p.m. Saturday after a report of a man trying to force his way into the home. The callers told 911 dispatchers the man had pointed a gun at someone inside and was making verbal threats to kill them.

When deputies arrived, residents identified the man as Shawn Alan Cochran, 36, of Firth, and said they’d last seen him running toward the back of the property. They told deputies Cochran always carried firearms and knives and that they believed he would kill them if they went outside.

As deputies searched the property, they noticed lights flicking on and off inside a nearby camper that wasn’t supposed to be occupied. When no one inside the camper responded to verbal commands, deputies brought in an Idaho Falls police K-9.

Within moments of the K-9 entering the camper, deputies heard a response — Cochran had been bitten by the dog and was indicating he would come out. Deputies then took him into custody. He was not armed at the time of his arrest, deputies said.

Deputies and Idaho Falls Ambulance personnel treated Cochran for the dog bite to his arm before he was taken to the hospital for a jail clearance.

He was then booked into the Bonneville County Jail in Idaho Falls on charges of felony aggravated assault, attempted burglary and misdemeanor resisting arrest.
